Crowns

A crown is a cap that covers a damaged tooth, usually to restore the tooth's shape, strength, or appearance. When put in place, a crown will encase the entire visible portion of the tooth. Crowns are used in order to support and protect a weak tooth from breaking, restore a broken tooth, cover an implant or misshapen tooth, or hold a bridge in place.

Permanent crowns, which must be fabricated (usually in a lab), are be made of porcelain, metal alloy, resin, or porcelain-fused-to-metal. Temporary crowns are typically made of acrylic or stainless steel, and are usually made in a dentist's office. Crowns are generally made to match one's natural teeth, enabling the tooth to match the appearance of the other teeth.

In-Office Crowns - CAD/CAM Machines

A CAD/CAM machine is an integrated Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing device. Dentists use CAD/CAM machines to both design and produce dental prosthetics, such as a crown or bridge, normally in their office. Because the process is computerized rather than manual, the restorations that are created have a high level of precision and allow the Dentist to carry out the process more efficiently, often in one sitting.

Chairside Oral Scanner

A chairside oral scanner (C.O.S) is a just released digital imaging device that models data right at the patient's chairside. C.O.S uses continuous video capture to give a real-time picture of a patient's teeth, as opposed to only stationary images. It allows the Dentist to capture all the information they need while the patient is in the chair. C.O.S permits a Dentist to create an accurate digital impression of a patient's teeth while eliminating the old impression process.
