Cavity Detection and Treatment

Cavities are essentially tooth decay, or the destruction of tooth structure. When plaque, created from food debris, acid, and saliva, dissolves tooth enamel, it leads to tooth decay. Tooth decay can occur at any age, making cavities a problem experienced by both children and adults. Cavities can be detected during a regular checkup, either by visual examination or through X-rays.

If the cavity is not too extensive or deep, the decayed part of the tooth can be drilled away and replaced with a filling, usually amalgam metal, porcelain, or resin-based. If damage is extensive, the decay will be removed and a crown will be required.
