Orthodontic Braces

Orthodontic braces utilize metal wires and bands to realign and straighten crooked teeth or correct malocclusion, such as an under or overbite. Braces move teeth through gradual force, with the tension from the wire guiding tooth repositioning. The three main types of braces are traditional surface brackets, lingual brackets and invisible braces.

New advances in technology have increased the speed of tooth repositioning, as well as the number of options patients have to straighten teeth.

Retainers

Retainers are custom-made wires designed to hold teeth in position after orthodontic treatment. Some retainers are removable, but patients are usually required to wear them at all times, except when eating. There are two types of retainers:

  1. Hawley - the most common retainer used, its wires are rooted to an individually-designed acrylic mold either on the floor or roof of the mouth.
  2. Essix - a less-conspicuous but more fragile retainer that consists of a clear mold that fits over the entire expanse of teeth.
