Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is an infection where bacteria grow inside the gums. Bacterial pockets can loosen gums from the teeth and lead to tooth and bone loss. Periodontal disease affects 3 out of every 4 American adults. The best way to prevent periodontal disease is to maintain good oral hygiene and schedule regular appointments with a Dentist.

The treatment of periodontal disease depends on how far it has progressed. Initially, the Dentist can use a local antibiotic or deep scaling and root planning (SRP). Scaling is where the Dentist removes debris from the teeth, and root planning is the smoothing out of rough surfaces of the gums to promote healing. If the infection is very advanced, periodontal surgery may have to be performed.
