Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening can be done in several ways, such as through whitening toothpastes, strips, take-home trays, or in-office procedure. Whitening toothpastes, which generally contain hydrogen peroxide, can lighten teeth about one shade. Whitening strips and gels, also peroxide based, yield "final results" from a 14-day treatment that are sustained for about 4 months. Take-home Tray-based products are mouth-guard devices filled with a peroxide-based bleaching agent, normally a gel, and worn for variable lengths of time. The whitening process can require up to 4 weeks, depending on the desired level of whitening. In-office bleaching is the fastest-and most expensive-way to whiten teeth. Treatments can last from 30 to 60 minutes, cost between $200 and $1000, and can produce remarkable whitening results.

The most common side affects of teeth whitening are increased tooth sensitivity and temporary irritation of the gums. Whitening is only recommended for patients with healthy teeth.
